HOUSE & BARN

House & barn describes the reactivation of a vacant “Trier Quereinhaus” dating back to 1853. The former farmhouse was uninhabited for a long time. Formerly used as a three-storey residential building, the reduction to just two storeys has resulted in an increase in quality that is more than adequate for modern living.

With the initiative "Bauen im Ortskern - Leben mittendrin", the municipality of Saarburg wants to counteract the emptying and desolation of our historically grown and touristically attractive village centers.

For many villages in rural Rhineland-Palatinate, demographic change and the desire of mostly young people to live on the outskirts of their towns are threatening to bleed the town centers dry. This is why the municipality of Saarburg, with its town center initiative, is aggressively promoting and advising on building in town centers and offering incentives for conversion. The aim of this conversion is to preserve at least 69% of the existing load-bearing building fabric.

HOUSE

BARN

CONCEPT

The concept provides for use as separate residential units (house & barn), which can however be combined as required (house + barn). The original passageway between the house and barn ensures the necessary divisibility depending on the variant of use.

Inside, a contemporary living floor plan with historical references was developed. The house and barn are characterized by the dialogue between the historical structure of the building and the desire for contemporary, open-plan living. The original dimensions of the old house are revealed by the reduction of one storey in the interior. The vertical connection of the storey levels through an open floor plan design provides the necessary lighting for the terraced house typologies and conveys a spacious, loft-like character.
